“THE RIBBLEHEAD VIADUCT has to be one of the Yorkshire Dales’ most iconic
sites but I've never seen it from that angle and in that way,” said Hester Cox when
describing the inspiration for this artwork. “It was stunning and I managed to grab a
few photographs to act as a memory prompt. I knew that I had to make a print of it
and I added the jackdaws to help give it a feeling of space and scale.”
Hester captured the moment as a limited edition print using an intricate
collagraph printing process. “Collagraph printmaking is similar to an etching,” she
explains. “However, instead of an etched metal plate, I create cardboard blocks that
are textured with such things as gesso, wood glue, carborundum paste and
sometimes collage elements like textured papers and plant materials.”
“It is a slow, painstaking process but it also has a meditative quality to it which I
love. I really like the way that I am able to revisit a particular time and place through
my work.”
See Hester Cox’s art at he Folly Museum of North Craven Life until 21 May and
at Printfest in Ulverston, Cumbria, 4-5 May. Visit hestercox.com for more.
