The Great Outdoors Spring 2019

(Jacob Rumans) #1

nestled along the English and Welsh border,
the Wye Valley served as a backdrop for the
action in seasons one and two. The Wye
Valley Walk is a 136-mile long-distance trail
encompassing both hill and river walking.
The valley is also a favourite spot for cyclists,
rock climbers, horse riders and kayakers – so
there’s plenty to enjoy.

  1. LAGAVULIN, ISLAY

Fan-favourite Ron Swanson from Parks and
Recreation couldn’t find enjoyment in his trip
to the UK until he embarked on his journey
to Scotland and experienced some of the
best whisky Islay has to offer. Whether you
agree with that sentiment or not, you’ll be
sure to find as much joy on Islay as Ron.
Seek out the hidden Lagavulin Bay or head
towards the striking Lagavulin standing

stones. A visit to the namesake distillery and
neighbouring Ardbeg and Laphroaig will
ensure you don’t get thirsty around here.

  1. WEST BAY, DORSET

Dorset’s attractive coastline can be as
dramatic as Broadchurch’s mysteries, with
much of the crime drama show’s filming
taking place along the Jurassic Coast.
The village of West Bay, between Lyme
Regis and Weymouth, is used regularly for
the programme, its cliffs a recognisable
backdrop. Other local landmarks crop up
regularly, and Visit Dorset have a web page
highlighting the importance of the show
to the area. West Bay is part of the Dorset
Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and the
South West Coast Path passes through.

  1. ARDVERIKIE ESTATE,
    CAIRNGORMS
The Ardverikie Estate at the western edge
of the Cairngorms National Park is used to
represent Balmoral in season two of The
Crown. Once you’ve taken in the beautiful
    castle and wandered the surrounding
grounds (which also feature in the show),
you can make plans to bag some of the
surrounding Munros – nearest are the trio
of Geal Charn, Creag Pitridh and Beinn
a' Chlachair in the Ardverikie Forest, with
Creag Meagaidh and its neighbours not far
away, on the other side of Loch Laggan.
The Pattack Falls are a good
    low-level option.
