CONTRIBUTORS & CONTACTS

Ben Lerwill
Ben Lerwill is a freelance travel writer
specialising in the outdoors. He has
hiked on six continents and spends far
too long daydreaming in front of maps,
but still counts the UK as his favourite
destination – upcoming trips include
Norfolk, Cornwall, Mull and Yorkshire,
where he will be walking the Cleve-
land Way. For this issue of The Great
Outdoors, he takes a walk around the
reservoirs of the Upper Derwent
Valley, considering the signiicance of
these artiicially constructed bodies of
water in the landscape. Ben Lerwill’s
irst non-iction children’s book comes
out later this year.

George Kitching
Twenty years ago, George swapped
city life in Newcastle for the wilds of
Cumbria, where a second-hand copy
of a Wainwright guide helped fuel a
new passion. Intrigued by the heritage
that surrounds the hills, he began his
blog, Lakeland Walking Tales, in 2016,
to recount these stories. A mix of his-
tory, humour and evocative landscape
writing, the website is attracting a
growing number of followers. George
is currently walking the Wainwrights
the Wainwright way – steadily explor-
ing all the ways up. In this issue of The
Great Outdoors, he recommends two
of his favourite Lakeland walks.

Fi Darby
One half of Dartmoor blogging duo
Two Blondes Walking and an
Ordnance Survey Get Outside
Champion, Fi Darby is a freelance
outdoor writer based in Devon. She
can often be found on Dartmoor
teaching navigation and camping
skills to adults and young people but
is just as much at home swimming the
coastline of Devon as she is
exploring its moors and coast paths.
Fi has just completed a Polar Bear
winter swimming challenge, as well
as sleeping outdoors for 50 nights in

  1. On page 35 she recommends
    some favourite walks on Dartmoor.

Alex Roddie
Our Digital Editor Alex Roddie has
recently returned from a variation on
the Cape Wrath Trail. In February, he
hiked 299 miles between Ardnamur-
chan Point and Cape Wrath, the most
north-westerly point on the mainland.
He expected winter conditions but
most of the snow disappeared after a
major thaw in the irst week. Hiking
in summer conditions in February
was strange – ticks were out in force,
and he spent more time hiking in
shirtsleeves than wrapped up against
the weather! You can read more
about Alex’s Cape Wrath Trail in next
month’s issue of The Great Outdoors.
