BIG LOVE

The best are inspiration
and entertainment. There’s
the helpful reminder to ‘Run
the Mile You’re In’ and the
political commentary of
‘You Run Better Than
the Government.’ The
Nintendo-themed ‘Tap
Here to Power Up’ and the
wry cruelty of a ‘You’re
Almost There’ anywhere
before mile 24.
Marathon running is
lonely: early morning
training runs on dark,
empty streets; missed
social events for early
nights and long runs. But
on race day, we emerge
from our training cocoons
to re-enter society. And
hundreds of kindhearted
spectators remind us we’re
not insane or alone and,
just maybe, we can do this.
A sign can save your
race. It could be something
deep and resonant that
touches on courage and the
human condition, or it
could be two simple words
that cut through your legs’
slow, painful shuff le and
your mind’s contemplation
of defeat: BEER AHEAD.

SIGNS!
