at primary school,
to know that my

embarrassment.’

I tell my kids that I

Brecon Beacons Trail Run
If you’ve even been walking in the Brecons (the mountain range in South Wales),
you know what you’re going to get: terrain and scenery that makes you regard
the locals with both envy and awe. It’s stunning but, blimey, it’s knotty and hilly.
This event offers four distances: 10K, half, full marathon and a 52km ultra.
Suffice to say that even the 10K features almost half a kilometre of climb, so,
to quote the knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: choose wisely.
Powys, May 11, trailevents.co

of smooth roads, coastal paths and
bumpy farmland around Stornoway
(population 8,000), with the final
section a glorious jaunt around the
grounds of the dramatic Lews Castle
and alongside the River Creed.
There’s a ceilidh in the evening that
the organisers describe as ‘epic’.

FAMILY OUTING

Bosworth Half Marathon
Doubling up as the Leicestershire and
Rutland AA County Championships
for 2019, this is a mildly undulating
but reasonably quick course through
the streets of Market Bosworth. As
well as a bespoke medal, you get your
pick of free race photos (if you can
bear to look at them, that is) and
because the race HQ is at the local
water park, this is one event your kids
won’t mind attending.

IF YOU ARE SO INCLINED

WATER FEATURES

Windermere Marathon
Over the past decade this has
regularly been ranked (by RW and
runners) as one of the most scenic
and well-organised marathons in the
UK. It’s not easy, being in the Lake
District, but the lovely route around
Lake Windermere – which takes in
Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Bowness-
on-Windermere and Ambleside

  • almost demands that you slow
down to fully appreciate the view.

Immortal 10K Stourhead
The Stourhead Estate – the venue for
this race and a National Trust property

  • is one of the oldest in the UK, dating
back to the 13th century. The current
manor house was built in the 18th
century, and the route has been well
thought out to ensure as much visual
candy as possible. Runners will be
taken out of the grounds, through
Stourton village, past the lake, across
a dam and through some woodland
before a thrilling finish up to the estate.

NICE AND EASY

Ipswich Summer 5K Series
Unwind after work with a gentle
two-lap trot round Christchurch Park
at this first event in a summer-long
series. It starts at 7.30pm and costs a
measly £8 – or £27 should you want
to enter all four and bag one medal a
month. Wallet-friendly, grass-roots
racing at its best.

FISSION EXPEDITION

Nuclear Rush Weekend
If you’re a bit of an obstacle-race nut,
this event is the a bit like the Oscars of
your year. The Nuclear Rush Weekend
is one of the biggest events of its
kind; last year it attracted 10,000
participants, all breathlessly eager
to experience a race in which the
challenges come thick and fast. Then
thicker and faster. The 12km option
features 90 obstacles while the
7km has 50, including something the
organisers have gleefully named the
‘Drop Deathslide’.
