KEY COMPOSITING SKILL NO.3 LAYER BLENDING MODES
Blend modes let us quickly blend our layers based on the values of the pixels, and how
they combine or compare with the pixels underneath. There are 27 blend modes to
choose, accessible via the dropdown at the top of the Layers panel (use Shift and + or -
to cycle through them). Watch the video to find out more about blend modes.
In our block face composite we’ve made use of the Multiply blend mode to merge the
blocks with the face. Multiply is one of the most useful modes in Photoshop. It works by
multiplying the values of the pixels, so the darkness of each layer is combined. When we
use it, areas can only go darker, never lighter. It means that the shadowy darker areas in
the block images show clearly on top of the face. Keep in mind that the combined photo
might need to be lightened afterwards to counteract the darkening effect of Multiply.

BLEND THE BLOCKS
Go to the Layers panel
and change the blend mode
to Multiply to blend the blocks
with the face. This means that
the darker parts of the blocks -
the grooves and crevices - will
show up over the lighter parts
of the face.
