ADD SURROUNDING
PIECES
Open another block image and
use the Lasso tool to make
a rough selection of some
of the scattered blocks over
the floor, then copy in to the
main image. Set the blend
mode to Multiply and lighten
the layer with Curves (Cmd/
Ctrl+M), then mask the edges
to blend them in.

CLONE TO TIDY
Make a new layer then
grab the Clone tool. Set Sample:
All Layers in the tool options
then zoom in close and use
the Clone tool to tidy any
messy areas. Finally, hit Cmd/
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E to merge a
copy of all layers then go to
Filter>Camera Raw Filter for
final tonal tweaks.

KEY COMPOSITING SKILL NO.5 TIDYING UP
After combining our photos there will usually
be a few patches or dodgy edges that give
it away. One way to fix these issues is to go
back through your layers and tidy a mask or
adjust a setting. But often it’s quicker to add
a new empty layer on top of everything, then
use the Clone and Healing tools to tidy. Both
these can be set to Sample All Layers (in the
context-sensitive tool options at the top), so
you can paint on the empty layer while sampling from those below. With an
image like this we would need to smooth out the floor. Using the Clone tool
at a low opacity of around 40% is ideal, as it allows us to gradually blend rough
or jagged tones and unsightly seams in the composite. Watch the video to find out more.
