lighthouse in the city of

Genoa’s port, the clash

between Italy’s oldest side

and the country’s newest continuously

operating club will celebrate its 100th

game in May.

Founded in 1893, Genoa won nine

league titles and one Coppa Italia before

Sampdoria had even seen

the light of day. But those

golden days are long gone

and the Rossoblu have won

nothing of note since.

Meanwhile Samp – who

emerged in 1946 from the

merger of Sampierdarenese

and Andrea Doria – were

Serie A champions in 1991,

have four Italian Cups to their credit, won

the European Cup-winners Cup in 1990

and were European Cup runners-up two

years later.

With Genoa drawing support mostly

from the city centre, they like to remind

their Sampdoria counterparts from the

outlying areas of their place, and in

2011 fans unveiled a banner that read:

“The city does not want you

Sampdoria...leave Genoa now!”

Yet for all their past

squabbles, fans of both clubs

did the city proud in 2018

when they came together to

pay their respects to the 43

people who lost their lives

when the city’s Morandi bridge

collapsed that August.
