heneverdisappoints.Remarkably,it wasthedayafterhis87th

birthdaywhenwesatdownonhisofficesofa,whichis decorated

withhisownillustrations,yetdespitehisageheretainsa senseof

child-likewonderwhentalkingaboutartandheseemspositively

overjoyedat stillhavingthechanceto drawwhathelikeseveryday.

It is rarethatthe"hero"tagis justifiedbut,formillionsof people,

SirQuentin'sscratchy,expressiveink-and-washdrawingsaretheirfirst

exposureto art.I stillrememberendlessafternoonsspentsatcross-leggedon

thecarpetof myprimaryschoolclassroomwhileMrsWilliamsreadaloud

George'sMarvellousMedicine,JamesandtheGiantPeachandmore.It wasn'tso

muchRoaldDahl'sstoriesthattickledme,butratherthefantasticalcover

illustrationsthatI couldseepeekingthroughmyteacher'sfingers.

Today,morethanever,it feelsas if weneedto beremindedof thefactthat

therearestillheroesoutthereandwherebetterto startthanwithSirQuentin's

joyousillustrationsonpage50.
