The De Morgans
14 March to 20 June
The outbreak of the First World
War transformed the practice
of Evelyn De Morgan, who was
greatly affected by the daily
reports of loss from the frontline.
Her expressive artworks [1878's
Night and Sleep, right] depict a
narrative of the shared anxiety
and grief caused by wartime.
Conversely, the works of her
husband William De Morgan tell
of his upbringing as the son of
a mathematician and friendship
with William Morris, seen in the
decorative, geometric designs
of his painted ceramics.
More than 120 pieces here
demonstrate the juxtaposition of
these closely linked artists’ work.

John Hitchens:
Aspect of Landscape
13 March to 27 June
John Hitchens was born in
1940 into artistic stock.
His grandfather Alfred was
a respected English
Impressionist, while his late
father Ivon was a semi-
abstract painter with a show
at Pallant House last year.
John’s own work continues
his father’s love of the South
Downs, reducing forms to
lines and swathes of colour.
More recently, he has used
aerial photography of the
Sussex landscape to help
reimagine its elements as
two-dimensional shapes.
