UPDATE

(Re)breaking the Ice

“I was nervous,” Karen Chen says. “I’ve always been more of a nervous competitor,
but it felt right to be out there again.” After a two-year hiatus from Grand Prix
competition, the 20-year-old figure skater from Fremont, Calif., finished eighth
at Skate America in October and placed third in the short program at the NHK
Trophy in Sapporo, Japan, one month later. Chen appeared in the Feb. 13, 2017,
edition of Facesin thecrowd after she won gold at the ’17 U.S. championships
and set a national record in the short program. But after her Olympic debut
in PyeongChang, where she finished 11th, she suffered a stress fracture
in her right foot and missed the ’18–19 season. She came back and won
silver at the Philadelphia Summer International in August, right before
she started her first semester as a premed student at Cornell. “I need to
realize that this is a difficult task,” she says. “I love the challenge.” —D.F.
