taken apart
the idea of
the mirrorless
camera, before
reconstructing
it into this – the Sigma fp.
Billed as the smallest
and lightest full-frame
mirrorless camera on the
market, it certainly packs
a photographic punch that
belies its diminutive stature,
and therefore it still carries
a hefty full-frame mirrorless
price-tag with it.
Mainfeatures
Sporting a 35mm full-frame
24.6MP Bayer CMOS sensor,
the fp makes an unexpected
departure from Sigma’s
proprietary Foveon sensor.
Activated by an electronic
shutter, the sensor offers
shutter speeds of 30secs to
1/8000sec as well as bulb,
setting the flash sync speed
limit at 1/30sec.
In stills mode, the shutter
can rattle off a staggering
18fps, which will fill the
buffer of 12 frames in under
a second. This can be
extended to 24 frames by
altering the image quality
settings. In 4K video mode
it can squeeze out 30fps,
while in 1080p the frame
rate is cranked up to 120fps.
Focusing is done using
a 49-point AF system that
al lows both single and
continuous focus. Having
opted out of on-sensor phase
detection AF, instead there’s
a contrast detection AF

aluminium body weighing in
at just 422g, battery included,
this is a tiny camera, and it’s
all the more impressive that it
packsa 35mmfull-framesensor.

Part of the Leica L Mount
al liance, the fp benefits from
a huge range of lenses, further
augmented by the availability
of the Sigma Mount Converter
MC-21 allowing it to fit Sigma
SAlenses.

Two additional 1/4in
threads mean the camera
can be customised with
accessories from camera grips
to hotshoe mounts, as well as
affording versatility in your
tripod attachment orientation.
4 SINKING IT
That’s no flip-out LCD
screen on the back. Instead
it’s a massive heat sink that
replaces the need for a noisy
fan to keep the temperatures
downwhileyou’refilming.
5 THAT’S A WRAP
Switching between
stills and video shooting
modes is done atop the
camera, via a colour-coded
physical switch.
