there’s a lot to be said for sticking with
one genre of photography, honing your skills and
practising until you know it inside-out. then there’s
the flip-side, where trying something new can spark
your creativity, as Jack appleton (jpappleton.com)
has done.
“My usual style is landscape photography, but then
i saw this concept online and decided to have a go at
something different. i scavenged around the house
for props, gathering a bulb from a lamp, a piece
of glass from a picture frame and some leftover
sparklers from bonfire night. i placed some black
card on the kitchen table then put the glass on top
to create the base reflection. with the bulb in place
on the glass, i secured a sparkler behind it on a piece
of blu tack. the backdrop was matt black card to
help in post-processing. once the sparkler had been
lit, i fired off as many shots as possible until the
sparks stopped. the shot was challenging, but that’s
how we learn and develop as photographers.”

tip
put your
safety first
when using sparklers it’s
always best to shoot outside
with water to hand to
minimise the risk
of fire.
