“I waslivingat my grandad’sa few
yearsbackwhenI tookthis.He has
a beautifulgarden,whichI made
extensiveuseof whenI waslearning
photography.Thattimespent
experimentinghasgonea longway
in shapingmy style,andI nowtendto
shoot a lotof macroimages.As soon
asyouowna macrolens,there’s
a millionpotentialshotseverywhere
youlook.It wasa greatwayto learn.
“Thisshootwasfairlysimpleon the
surface,althoughquitea lotactually
wentintoit behindthescenes.I hung
outvariousChristmasdecorations

theni ghtbefore.I wouldhavemade
a biggershotwithmorethanjustthe
one decoration,butthiswasreally
justa te stshot.
“I gotup earlybecauseI wantedthe
itemsto lookas frostyas possible.
Themorningsunhadn’tyetemerged
sohadlittleeffecton theimage.The
shotwaslit primarilywithflash.I used
twooff-cameraflashesforthelighting
witha warminggel attached.I switched
th e camera’swhitebalanceto tungsten
tocompensateforthewarmgel and
bringthecolourbackto daylight,but
moreimportantly,to leaveeverything
thatwasn’tcaughtin thekeylightcold
looking.Thesecondflashis what’s
gi vingthesubtlebacklight,catching
th e edgeof thebranchandmaking
thefrost sparkle.”
