Cartier Bresson
and Robert Doisneau are my
big inspirations. There are two
methods I use: I either ask
my subjects so they know I’m
taking photos of them, or I do
it secretly. The Micro Four
Thirds system is perfect for
this work, so I use an Olympus
PEN and E-M10 MkII, and

Kirk says: Something about
the backdrop of Paris in mono
instantly harkens back to the
days of Bresson, and Andrej’s
inspirations are more than
evident, albeit with a modern
twist. The first thing that’s
apparent is the formation of

a st yle.Streetphotography
isoftensplitintotwobroad
spectrums – the light hunters
and the moment catchers –
and these fall into the latter.
Andrej strives to capture
what many of us consider to
be the mundane everyday
activities of others, though
he also applies his geographic
eye to the scene. You can
clearly see he favours
centralised compositions,
while the use of strong lines
direct the viewer’s gaze. This

iscoupledwitha well-honed
eye forcontrast,managingto
mix both photographic and
editing techniques to bring
out a wide range of midtones,
ranging from the bright city
and faces of its inhabitants to
the darker tones found in the
fashion of the time.
Although sepia is often
considered a relic of a bygone
era by today’s photographers,
the subtle use here actually
lends itself very well to
creating a timeless effect.
