    Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story
    leads nominations.
    NBC, January 5.
The Golden Globes ceremony returns to NBC, and
[checks notes] anything can happen because this
is the unpredictable awards show where [checks
notes again] the nominees and guests drink a lot
of alcohol. It’s going to be really fun because
[checks notes one more time] ... Ricky Gervais is
hosting again this year? Really? j.c.

  2. (^) See A Hidden Life
    Award-season binge begins.
    In theaters.
Terrence Malick’s latest is not more Heideggerian
fun with egrets and beautiful women twirling on
beaches—there is a plot. The theme of longing to
be close to a higher power is once more in effect,
but the setting is Nazi Germany and this time
good thoughts are translated into good acts. It’s
Malick’s best since The Tree of Life. d.e.

  3. (^) See Yol a
    Plus Amythyst Kiah.
    Music Hall of Williamsburg,
    January 8.
    British country-soul singer-songwriter Yola’s
debut album Walk Through Fire was a light this
year, thanks to the artist’s arresting vocals and
sharp pen and stately production from the Black
Keys’s Dan Auerbach. Catch her in January for
breezy tunes like “Ride Out in the Country,” “It
Ain’t Easier,” and “Faraway Look.” If you go, don’t
miss the opening set from Tennessee folk singer
Amythyst Kiah, whose voice is every bit as power-
    ful as the headliner. c.j.
    TALKS

  4. (^) See Jane McAlevey
    In solidarity.
    The Strand, January 8.
Despite decades of attacks on union rights, the
American labor movement is poised to be a major
force this election season, according to Intelligenc-
er’s Sarah Jones. If you want to understand why,
you can’t do better than Jane McAlevey. Catch the
longtime labor organizer and activist in conversa-
tion with filmmaker Astra Taylor in January.

  5. (^) Wat ch Anne With an E
    Final season with Anne Shirley.
    Netflix, January 3.
Canadian fans of this Anne of Green Gables adap-
tation, which has already aired on the CBC, have
expressed their disappointment that this season
will, apparently, be its last. Now that it’s arriving
on Netflix, everyone else can enjoy that season and
complain about the show ending too. j.c.
