HOW TO Set up and use Sidecar

Side by side
To use Sidecar, you’ll need to sign in
to iCloud on both your Mac and iPad. Both
devices need to be on the same network, with
Bluetooth turned on as well. Now just click on
the new Sidecar icon in System Preferences.

Click to connect
Your iPad will appear in the Connect
menu in Sidecar preferences, so just click to
select it. There are also options for using the
Apple Pencil with Sidecar, and placing the Touch
Bar and Sidebar controls on the iPad screen.

IN THE DOCK
These buttons can show or hide
the Mac Dock on your iPad
screen, allowing you to launch
your favorite apps.

CMD, OPT & SHIFT
The Sidebar buttons include
equivalents for the Mac’s Cmd,
Opt and Shift keys. The bottom
button turns Sidecar off.

MOVING THE MENU
Use the Arrangement tab in the
Mac’s Display preferences to move
the Mac’s menu bar to your iPad.

KEEP IN TOUCH
This bottom toolbar mimics the
Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro,
showing the main tools for apps.

FULL–SCREEN MODE
We’re running Photos in a Window
on our Mac, but you can switch to
full–screen mode and use all your
iPad’s screen space.

ONE OF THE coolest new
features in macOS Catalina
and iPadOS is Sidecar, which
enables you to use your iPad as
a second screen for your Mac. Sidecar is
really useful, as you can do all sorts of
things with that second screen. You can
leave your web browser or Mail app on the
Sidecar screen so that it’s always visible
while you work with other apps on your
Mac’s main screen. You can even use an
Apple Pencil with the Mac apps that are
running on the iPad screen, for design or
graphics work.
Sidecar does have a few limitations. You
can’t tap on the iPad screen with your
Ľqjhu#wr#frqwuro#|rxu#Pdf/#vr#Vlghfdu#sxwv#
two tool bars, called the Touch Bar and
Sidebar, on the iPad screen instead. These
provide basic touch controls for your Mac
apps, and help you to navigate around.
You’ll also need a compatible Mac and iPad
— see bit.ly/ml163. CLIFF JOSEPH
