It jumpsontheultralightmousebandwagon,boastinga

weightof66gthankstoit usinga perforatedhoneycomb-

likestructure.Whatmakesthismousedecidedlydifferent

fromanyoftheotherultralightmicethatusethissortof

structure,though,isthatit’spurelyinternal.Theouter

surfacejustlookslikea regularoldmouse,witha matt

blackplasticfinish.

Roccatconsidersthisa significantpluspointforcomfort,

butwe’veactuallycometoquiteliketheextragripsome

holeymicecanprovide.Nonetheless,thePureUltradoes

haveanexcellentdesignintermsofoverallergonomics.

Thedeepgrooveforthethumbandslightlyshallower

grooveontheoppositesideprovideloadsofgrip,asdoes

theverylightlytexturedsurface– it’slikea soft-touchfinish

butfeelsslightlyharderandsmoother.

Asisthestylewiththeseultralightmice,therearefew

featurestonotehere.Forbuttons,yougetleft,

right,scrollwheel,back,forwardandtwoDPI

buttonsuptop,allofwhichareofcourse

reprogrammable.Underneathyou’llfindthe

Owl-eye,16,000DPIopticalsensorthat’s

basedontheexcellentPixArt 3389 sensor.

Inside,anARMCortex-M0,48MHzprocessor

and512kBofmemorykeepthingsticking

along,providinga 1000Hzpollingrate.

Unlikesomeultralightmice,thecablehereisn’t

ultra-softandbraidedbutinsteadhasa

conventionalrubbercoating.However,it’s

reasonablyflexible,sodoesn’tinterruptyour

movementtoomuchandit’sa plentiful1.8mlong.

Onfirstimpression,weexpectednottolike

theshapeofthismousetoomuchbutinuse

wefoundit tobeverygood.It’sonthesmaller

side but we still found it comfortable for

all grip styles – palm, claw and fingertip –

despite our fairly large hands (19.5cm from

middle fingertip to wrist). This was helped considerably

by the light weight and the grippy surface that ensured a

secure feel.

Tracking was flawless – we were unable to detect any

problems in it keeping up with our fast movements during

gaming. We also found the position of the DPI buttons to

work very well mid-game, although the thumb buttons

have too much travel before they register a press, and it’s

too easy to accidentally press the raised bit that sits

between them and so miss the buttons.

Roccat’s Swarm software is excellent, offering

customisation of every aspect of the mouse including

button functionality, polling rate and lift distance. Crucially, it

also lets you turn down the otherwise dazzlingly bright

RGB LED that lights up the Roccat logo.

We also think the Pure Ultra looks the part too, thanks to

its sleek all-black livery. It also helps that the Roccat logo is

quite funky-looking.

Conclusion

The Roccat Kone Pure Ultra is an

excellent addition to the ultralight

gaming mouse market. It’s stylish,

comfortable, performs flawlessly and

is indeed very light. The only thing we

were a little less keen on is the thumb

buttons, which we found a bit

indistinct. The price also isn’t a

standout bargain, but it’s reasonable.
