Meet our guests

How’d you start stitching?
I started as a child, then took a break
for more than 30 years. When I retired
in 2000, I was looking for a hobby and
remembered how much I’d liked cross
stitching. It’s like bike riding – you
never forget how it’s done!
Favourite WOXS design?
As a peacock fan I loved the ‘Peacock
in Peonies’ design by Amanda
Gregory in issue 245 (Sept 2016).
Stitchy designer you admire?
Thea Gouverneur – she has the most
gorgeous flower patterns. Morris also
has beautiful Art Nouveau patterns.
Who’re your stitching buddies?
Two years ago I founded a ‘stitching
club’ for ladies from my village and
friends. We meet once a month.
Who do you like to stitch for?
Friends all over the
world. All my pen
pals have a birthday
calendar with the
flower patterns by
Thea Gouverneur.

What’s your stitchy heaven?
Unlimited hours in the day so that I
could stitch every design that I would
love to do. Also, unlimited materials!
Who’d you love a cross
stitching session with?
Elizabeth Almond! She’s produced
amazing designs using many
techniques. I’d love to hear how she
plans and executes her ideas, and to
thank her for all the lovely projects
that she makes available for free.
Any cross stitching disasters?
I measured out my fabric and then
somehow rotated it. I ended up
stitching a
little too close
to the edge
for comfort!
Fave WOXS
design?
I think the
Scandi-inspired
‘Chickens
Placemat’ design from issue 284
(Sept 2019) looks just delightful.

Why do you love stitching?
It helps me relax. I enjoy all elements
of it, from sorting threads at the start
to seeing the project develop.
What drives you mad about
cross stitching?
I do find fractional stitches frustrating.
I stitch on 18- and 20-count aida
quite often which can be challenging.
Favourite cross stitch designer?
I have several, but Lesley Teare is my
favourite. I love her teddies, flowers
and birds. She’s so inspiring and she
has been really helpful when I’ve
found things tricky.
WOXS design
you love?
The Lucie Heaton ‘Bird
Quilt’ designs which
are turned into a quilt
are beautiful (Part 1
of 3 starting in issue
283, Aug 2019). She
has used fantastic
colours to bring all
the birds to life.
