Project Glistening Koi

DESIGNED BY KAY WIDDOWSON

Use bright threads and shimmering sequins to create

a trio of regal koi in a unique top-down perspective

swimming!

W

ith their bright colours and
elaborate fins, koi can be
seen elegantly swimming
through many a back-garden pond.
This stitched version captures all the
beauty of these Japanese fish, and the
high level of detail is a great way to
challenge your stitching skills. You can
see Kay’s stunning original illustration
on page 78.
Stitched onto gorgeously soft
28-count cashel pale blue linen, the
detail is captured using whole cross
stitch, fractionals and backstitch. The
chart alternates between one and two
strands for the backstitch, using the
denser stitch to emphasise elements
of the fish as well as highlighting the
pond weed. The finishing touch is

adding sparkling sequins to mimic the
koi’s beautiful iridescent scales.
A stretched canvas gives the piece
a modern finish, but the soft linen
would also look great turned into a
cushion, perhaps to adorn a garden
chair next to a pond containing some
real mesmerising koi inhabitants!

Just keep

I love koi and their individual markings
and watching them making ripples in the
water. I wanted to capture their movement in
this design. I’ve treated the background in a
contemporary way, so the design looks fresh.
