A web developer of today time travels

to 2030. Browsers have become VMs.

Web apps have native API access on

devices. HTTP/5 makes communications

real time. WebAssembly is everywhere.

Desktop and mobile apps run seamlessly

on the web. Web apps can be coded in any

programming language. AR/VR is a first-

class citizen on web. But the transported

dev finds some things unchanged. There

are 20 major SPA frameworks. Design and

accessibility are challenging. Performance

tuning still painful. Offline is a utopia.

We work in the property world, which is changing
quickly as sectors like build-to-rent gain traction,
and the role of our designers is evolving accordingly. As
proptech works hard to catch up with the highly
personalised services that we’re seeing in, for example,
food delivery and banking, we’ll see more design with
consumer experience at its core. Proptech is starting to
respond with brands such as Homeviews (like
TripAdvisor for private renting) but, as an industry, we
haven’t exactly had our ‘Monzo moment’ yet. It’s fast
approaching though: we’re going to see radical change
over the next 10 years.

Designers of today will have to differentiate themselves by being business
literate. This will allow them to tackle bigger strategic problems. We need to
move towards business design. This is what the corporate world desperately
needs to shift gear to better serve their customers. My personal wish is for my
job to evolve, making me a trusted ally in creating tomorrow’s organisations’
evolutionary purpose. Dieter Rams stated that “Good design is sustainable” –
between the 1960s and now we’ve lost our way. I hope that ‘good’ design will
become the norm because, right now, we and our planet need it more than ever.

STATE OF DEVREL

More and more companies have teams
dedicated to ensuring developer-targeted
products have a healthy community. The
developer relations consultancy Hoopy has
produced a report into developer relations and
here Matthew Revell looks at the highlights.

WEBVR
webvr.info
WebVR is an open specification that makes
it possible to experience VR in your
browser. The goal is to make it easier for
everyone to get into VR experiences, no matter
the device. This website contains a bunch of
developer resources to help you get on board.

Over the next 10 years, web
development will focus on
optimising the user experience,
improving speed and standardising
across different browsers. High visual
web accessibility will become the norm
by 2030. As a front-end developer,
making ‘accessibility more accessible’
for developers will continue to be an
important part of my job. However, by
2030, the advanced development tools
will let me concentrate on delivering
features developers love and spend
less time on administrative tasks.
