Designer, developer and photographer Herbie Duah
has a vision. Born and raised in Ghana but now living
in Phoenix, Arizona, he believes we will all have our own
app. Not content to wait around until someone else builds
his, Duah has crafted his portfolio in that style.
Herbie Duah App, currently in version 1.5, begins
as a minimal experience with an abundance of white
space. Favouring a zigzag layout with subtle fade-in CSS
animations, the structure is understated. An initial summary
introduction page interweaves nuggets of text with Duah’s
own photography before a neat tab-based menu offers
deeper access to work, photos and his impressive resume.
The site really comes into its own, however, when we
explore the Customize section and the app-like options for
changing viewing preferences. Duah has cleverly invited
visitors to adjust general settings for slider UI, accessibility
mode, video controls and even technical or non-technical
language. Similarly you can pick background colours,
gradients and patterns, a choice between ‘smooth’ or ‘crazy’
CSS animations and even some preset themes. Many of the
choices are remembered by the app for subsequent visits
and the feature overall does a charming job of illustrating
Duah’s philosophy.
