Import bookmarks and
settings to BraveQ
After years of using Firefox, I read
your issue about ‘Browse the web
with Brave’ and decided to give it a try.
All went well except that the drop-down
menu for importing passwords and
bookmarks from your old browser
doesn’t list Firefox, only Internet Explorer.
I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling
Brave but Firefox is still absent.

This is an odd glitch but one possible
cause is that Brave can’t ‘see’ Firefox
because it’s been installed in a different
place. Visit brave://settings/
importData or click the browser’s menu
button and select
Bookmarks, ‘Import
bookmarks and
settings’.
If you still don’t
see additional
browsers in the
drop-down menu,
you’ll need to
import via HTML.
Open Firefox and
press Ctrl+Shift+B,
then click ‘Import
and Backup’ and
select ‘Export
Bookmarks to
HTML’. Save the file, then re-visit Brave’s
‘Import bookmarks and settings’ section.
In this drop-down menu, choose
Bookmarks HTML File and open the file
you’ve just saved.
For passwords, try Nirsoft’s excellent
PasswordFox (search for it at www
.nirsoft.net). This also creates a file that
can then be imported into Brave.

Create Bitly links for your
websiteQ
Thank you for your excellent
magazine, which I buy everyfortnight. I have a website, Television
Heaven (televisionheaven.co.uk), that
reviews classic TV programmes. I like to
use the full title of every show to make
it easier to find in search engines. As a
result, some of the URLs are quite long
because they include the page’s full title,
which looks untidy when posting to
social media such as Facebook, Twitter
or Instagram. I am thinking of creating
Bitly URLs (bitly.com) for posting on
these platforms. How do I create them
and will I still be able to retain the original
link with the title in?

Bitly links are ideal for trimming
unwieldy links, and the service also
lets you see how many clicks specific
links get over a 30-day period.
Creating a shortened URL is simple.
Once you’ve signed up for an account(which is free), click Create. Now paste
your long link into the box, let the
website process it, then give the bit.ly
link a memorable, easy-to-type name
that still describes where the link will take
your visitors. The service lets you know if
the URL you want is already in use, and
gives you a chance to change it if that’s
the case. Finally, save
your new URL.
Your original
URL will still be
operational, because
Bitly just redirects
visitors rather than
replacing the link.
