491, ‘What to do when Windows 7 dies’,
I followed the advice about upgrading to
Windows 10 for free by downloading
Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool. The
process was
seamless and
saved me
about £200.
So thank you
Nik and Web
User - I’ve just got the price of my
subscription back in spades!

eSIMs prevent SIM-swap
fraud
Many thanks for your FAQ about eSIMs
in Issue 492, and for your magazine’s
coverage of security issues in general.
However, your esteemed correspondent
David Crookes missed a trick
in his eSIM article. One
additional advantage seems
to be that eSIMS should,
hopefully, tackle
widespread
SIM-swap frauds
because it will no longer
be possible to apply for a new SIM card
on someone else’s behalf and receive it
in the post.

Who to trust with our data?
I found it alarming to read in Issue 492’s
news sections that add-ons from Avast
and AVG have been banned by Google
and Mozilla for collecting users’ data.
Aren’t these security companies meant
to protect us online rather than invade
our privacy? If we can’t trust them, then
who can we trust?
I used to have Avast Free Antivirus
installed on my PC but I became
annoyed with the number of pop-ups it
displayed. I wonder if these had anything
to do with data collection? In any case, I
won’t be using Avast software in future.

O YOU THINK FOLDABLE PCs
LIKE LENOVO’S (bit.ly/
fold493) ARE A GOOD IDEA?

I have had a foldable PC for years. It’s
called a laptop!
Gary Olsen

It seems more like a gimmick than
anything – and a costly one, at that.
Mark Chatham

Yes, it’s sort of a bridge between
tablets and laptops.
Surfing life’s waves! @p_banes

It’s a lovely idea but they seem so
fragile. I’d want to see one after a year
of use. And they’re so expensive.
Caroline Chapman @cantstopthesgnl

I still like having a 17in laptop screen,
so a foldable PC is clearly not
designed for the likes of me. Besides,
if you want portability, why not just
have a tablet?
Lynn Sharpe

All these new innovations are things
that no one is desperate for and yet
they always cost a small fortune. I
have no need for my PC to fold in half
and, if I did, I would simply buy a
laptop. £2.5k for a tiny screen. Just
who is going to buy this?
Rich Grove

Daft, expensive, useless gimmick.
I’d be embarrassed to be seen with
one. You could get a high-spec
gaming PC that does something
useful for less money.
Lance Parkington

What’s the point of a folding
computer?

O YOU WELCOME TWITTER’S
PLAN TO LET YOU CONTROL
WHO REPLIES TO YOUR
TWEETS (bit.ly/twitter493)?

It’s about time. Currently, the biggest
advantage to Facebook over Twitter is
that you don’t get random strangers
and spambots replying to your
messages. Being able to filter out the
idiots will make Twitter much more
pleasant to use.
Chris Gaunt

It might help to combat bullying but it
will also stifle debate and means you
won’t be able to tell people such as
obnoxious media commentators when
you disagree with them.
Anne Dimmock

Good. Twitter has become a horrible
place that’s full of trolls and this might
put an end to it.
John Happenstance
