Every Wednesday between April and
September, come rain or shine, members
of the Wapping Group of Artists meet
to paint outdoors at locations in London
and along the river Thames. The group
was initially established in 1946 to record
the busy life of London’s dockland, but
members now paint anywhere between
Henley and the Thames estuary. Almost
incidentally, the ‘Wappers’ say, they have
recorded the changing face of London
and the river Thames for over 70 years.
Their annual exhibition at the Mall
Galleries is a delightful exploration of
London and its river – and the year’s
weather – as experienced by this
unique group of 25 artists, featuring
approximately 120 works in various
media. There will be an extra opportunity
to meet some of the artists on Thursday
March 12 (5.30 to 8pm), when three
members of the group – John Killens,
John Walsom and Derek Daniells – will
demonstrate how they approach the
same subject in their own styles and
media. No booking is necessary, and
admission is free. For more information go
