PRACTICAL

DEMONSTRATION Higger To r

 A view of
the scene
If you compare this
photograph with the nished
painting it will be obvious how
many more colours I could see
by working on location

 STAGE ONE
Having pushed the easel legs rmly into the ground and
tied the back of the stretcher support bar to my easel,
I lightly marked out my composition with a little blue – just
a rough guide. Next I applied a mix of cerulean blue with a
tiny touch of lemon yellow and lots of white, starting at the
top of the canvas and getting lighter as I worked down

 STAGE TWO
I began to nd the colours for the
mountains in the background and then
the colour of the land below. It gets
easier to judge colours as you build the
painting up as you can compare them
with what you already have down and
adjust accordingly

t STAGE THREE
The next stage was to work on the
darker colours and the lighter grass
colours. I much prefer doing these
scenes in winter as I prefer not to have
greens, and I like the colours winter
o ers me. I do make sure that I’m
appropriately dressed
