The remaining small areas of masking uid
were removed and some of the resulting hard
edges softened with a damp brush. Final

 STAGE THREE
Some of the masking uid was removed
from the distant elds – a clean nger is
essential for this process and the paper must
be thoroughly dry – which were then painted
with mixes of cobalt blue plus cobalt violet;
cobalt blue plus permanent magenta with
a touch of raw sienna, using a light touch to
ensure the underpainting was not disturbed.
Care was taken not to over-detail this area,
with some of the rst wash left untouched.
Washes of raw sienna plus cobalt violet, raw
umber plus cobalt violet, cobalt blue plus
cobalt violet were applied to the sheep.
Washes of raw umber plus cobalt violet,
cobalt blue plus permanent magenta with
a touch of raw sienna, ultramarine blue and
burnt sienna were applied to the hawthorn
bushes. All washes were applied to dry
paper, wet-into-wet, thus retaining the soft,
atmospheric feel


washes were added to the foreground using
the three primary colours. Care was taken to
retain some of the initial atmospheric washes.
Final details to the sheep and bushes were
undertaken using cobalt blue plus permanent
magenta with a touch of raw sienna,

ultramarine blue and burnt sienna and,
nally, burnt sienna plus ultramarine blue.
Particular attention was paid to all edges. A
combination of lost-and-found edges ensured
that the mood and atmosphere were retained
