PRACTICAL
q FINISHED PAINTING
Sweet Peas in a Pale Blue Jug, mixed media, 2020in (5151cm).
I used the same dark red violet mixture to paint the darker
sweet peas then strengthened the colour of the paler and mid-
tone owers using the same pastels as earlier, but adding a little
extra pressure this time and shaping the owers. I also brought
in a few more blue violet mid-tone blooms within the owers.
I darkened the red violet backdrop to the owers especially on
the edge, where a few of the pink owers met the background
and used a stronger blue, a mid-tone cyan blue pastel on the
top left-hand corner. I continued the blue to the top centre and
then used a paler grey blue to graduate the colour, blending it
with the darker values on the right-hand corner. A pale green
pastel suggested a few stems and a paler blue was added to the
lighter side of the vase while strengthening the shadow side
with a mix of the same mid-value blue pastel overlaid with a
mid-value violet pastel. I used white pastel at the edge of the
table and on the edge of the jug, then applied grey pastel over
the table and used the same mid-value blue pastel under the
jug where I had the base dark red violet initially. I added the
reection of a few owers to nish the painting
STAGE FOUR
I strengthened the tonal value of the darker violet ower heads, and the
wash of dark red violet in the background. Then I used a very pale blue
wash of phthalolcyanine blue in the top left-hand corner, extending it to the
table and the lighter part of the jug. I also strengthened the shadow side of
the jug with more ultramarine blue overlaid with spectrum violet
