Inspiration from The Artist archives

Since 1931 The Artist has been created by artists, for artists. To celebrate our long and
distinguished history, each month we will share the wealth of knowledge, tips, information and advice
from past features, by including them on our website at painters-online.co.uk. To access this great
content from past issues of The Artist, click on the links below

Portrait drawing
‘A front view of the face will make it easiest for
you to get the proportions right. Draw rst the
contour of the head... and mark the division
between face and hair. Draw faintly a line down
the middle of the face, and mark three dividing
lines, one marking the distance from the hair to
the eyebrows, another under the nose, and the
other at the bottom of the chin.’  W.H. Allcott
continues with a wealth of advice and tips for
drawing a successful portrait in this feature from
our March 1950 issue.

Ways with watercolour
‘If the artist has a complete knowledge of the use
of bright as well as dull colours he (or she) will
be better equipped to give a more interesting
interpretation of his (or her) subject. If one
continues to paint low-toned sketches to excess,
the tendency is to get darker and more dismal
in each successive picture. My advice, therefore,
is not to be afraid of colour but enjoy the
exhilaration which it gives...’ Learn more from
Frank Sherwin in this extract from Volume 59,
covering March to August 1960 issues.
