PICASSO
and PAPER
Picasso and Paper at the Royal
Academy of Arts, London brings
together more than 300 works
on paper from the artist’s 80-year
career. Picasso used paper as a
tool to explore ideas, tearing it,
cutting it, folding it, sticking it
and even burning it to achieve
the efects he was looking for
- a revolutionary innovation
in the early 20th century. He
experimented with all types of
paper, which he hoarded to reuse
as components in his art – from
decorative wallpaper, visiting
cards and labels to newsprint and
napkins.
The exhibition will include
letters, illustrated poems and
photographic collaborations
with the artist, Dora Maar. There
will also be an opportunity to
see documentary footage of the
artist at work, studies for Guernica
and sketchbooks, which feature
the beginnings of many of his
greatest works.
To coincide with the exhibition,
the gallery has organised a
number of events including a
series of three talks by Picasso
specialist, Dr Marilyn McCully.
Picasso’s Turning Points takes
place on February 20, March 12
and April 2, each from 11am until
12 noon. These talks will explore
Picasso’s works and examine
how he became one of the most
important igures of the 20th
century. The talks will each be
followed by a ten-minute Q&A
session. For more information
