The last word

We chat to Lisa Chemery, the talented

designer behind Frogginette knits...

Who taught you to knit?
My grandmother initially taught me
when I was about seven, but I wasn’t
particularly interested back then.
She taught me again in 2002, when she
was visiting me in New York City and my
co-worker was expecting a baby.

that you knitted?
I remember it perfectly – in fact I have it!
I found it in my grandmother’s attic after
she passed away; it was a garter stitch
scarf made with bulky red acrylic.

I love designing charming, whimsical
children’s clothes that are unfussy
and practical.

What are you working on right now?
I am working on a new cold-weather
collection inspired by Beatrix Potter,
Hobbits and my own childhood memories
of my grandmother’s cottage garden.

I love working with merino, I think it’s
especially great for children’s knits.

Anything can be a source of inspiration:
vintage illustrations, travelling, the real-life

patterns and textures I see around me...
But most often, children themselves
inspire me: what they might enjoy
wearing, what would feel good to wear
while they discover the world.

doubt about a technique, YouTube has a
wealth of tutorials. Pick out yarn you truly
love, making sure it’s appropriate for the
pattern you want to knit, and don’t forget
to knit a gauge swatch.

I set aside my needles for a little while
and do other creative things until I get
my mojo back!

Receiving so many emails from knitters
who initially doubted their abilities and
were so thrilled with what they were able
to accomplish using my patterns.

Knitting for babies and children (or
anyone, really!) is an act of love. There is
something very special in seeing children
explore the world wearing something that
you created stitch by stitch.
