Ophelia

In this fresh take on the William Shakespeare
play Hamlet, young noblewoman Ophelia
(Daisy Ridley) is adopted by Queen Gertrude
(Naomi Watts) of medieval Denmark as a
lady-in-waiting, but soon falls in love – to
her peril – with the young Prince Hamlet
(George MacKay).

FIVE FACTS:

  1. This film adaptation essentially pivots the
well-known play so that more of it is told
from the view of Ophelia, a character in the
    original play.

  2. Clive Owen also appears in this film
as the fictional King Claudius, Gertrude’s
    second husband.

  3. This isn’t Owen’s first time playing a king,
as he also took the title role in the 2004 film
    King Arthur.

  4. It’s also not his first time co-starring
with Naomi Watts, as they had previously
    appeared in 2009’s The International.

  5. Despite the obvious Shakespearean
influence, the film Ophelia is more directly
based on Lisa Klein’s novel of the same name.
