One of the reasons I do a lot of zebras
is they come with their own built-in
diagonals which makes things look more
dynamic. Examples can be seen here
in my scratchboard of a large group of
zebras (Fig 20 ) and also my close-up
of a zebra’s head (Fig 21) – which you
will notice not only includes the diagonals
of the stripes but also the whole direction
of the head is diagonally across the
image.
It’s been fun exploring compositional
elements. There are many more which we
will touch on in future issues but do have a
try and feel free to send in examples to the
