Sturdy stitches

Q

I’m stitching motifs onto

handkerchiefs for my

grandparents and wondered how

best to protect the stitches. Should

I use interfacing, Angels?

Beth Chown, via Facebook

A

What a lovely gift idea,

Beth! Interfacing is great

for protecting the back of your

finished stitching, but exposed

interfacing doesn’t look particularly

neat so it’s mostly used between

two pieces of fabric rather than as

a backing itself. Interfacing, once

ironed on, acts as a glue that helps

keep your stitches secure. In this

case, we think the best way to

protect your finished stitching

would be to use medium-weight

iron-on interfacing on the back of

your handkerchiefs and then line

each one with your choice of

matching fabric to disguise the

interfacing. You can pick up a 1x1m

pack of Iron On Interfacing from

http://www.buddlycrafts.com for £2.79.

Ready, thread, go!

Q

One of my friends was

telling me about a special

device she saw that allows you to

store threaded needles. Do you

know of such a thing?

Amelia Stockley, Manchester

A

We do indeed, Amelia!

What your friend has most

likely seen is a Dome Threaded

Needle Case made by Clover. This

clever device allows you to store up

to 10 threaded needles by keeping

them in numbered slots and

winding the threads onto its reel.

They’re kept safe under a clear

plastic lid that allows you to keep

tabs on what you’ve put inside. It’s

great for storage and for stitching

on the go, as well. You can prepare

your needles in advance, so you

don’t have to fiddle about with

needles and scissors while you’re

on the move. You could even thread

all your needles at the beginning of

a home-based session, store them

on the reel, then stitch away

without having to keep stopping

to re-thread your needle. The case

is available from multiple crafting

stockists, including LoveCrafts

at http://www.lovecrafts.com, where

it’s priced at £6.50.

Paper chase

Q

I’m trying to find bright and

colourful patterned papers

for some cards I’m making for my

friends. Can you suggest anything

suitably modern and spring-like?

Amber Jensen, Bristol

A

It sounds like you’re making

some wonderful cards! We

think Dovecraft’s vibrant Over The

Rainbow Paper Pad might be just

the thing to help finish them off.

The papers feature bold geometric
