2 In April, Ezra Marcus and James D.
Walsh wrote a cover story for New
Yo r kaboutLarry Ray, the father of a Sarah
Lawrence student
who moved into his
daughter’s dorm and
established a cultlike
atmosphere of psy-
chological manipula-
tion, sex, and money
(“The Stolen Kids of
Sarah Lawrence,”
April 29–May 12,
2019 ). Thatstoryled to an FBI investi-
gation, and this month, Ray was
arrestedonsuspicion of sex traffick-
ing,extortion,andforced labor, among
othercharges. Hefaces a possible life
sentence.Thearrest was widely covered
bythenationalmedia. CNN’s Jake Tap-
percommendedthe reporting, writing,
“Thankyouforallthe time you spent
bringing thishorror to public light.”
AndonMorningJoe, former senator
ClaireMcCaskillsaid, “Hat tip to those
journalists.We forget sometimes that
there are journalists out there that
uncover the ugliest side of humanity.”
And for the families of Ray’s alleged vic-
tims, the arrest brought some measure
of relief. The aunt of one of the students
told the reporters, “We are ecstatic ...
We still have work to do, but we’re so
happy that the biggest obstacle is in jail.”
Speaking at the indictment, William F.
Sweeney Jr., the FBI assistant director in
charge of New York, said, “There is no
excuse for the kind of behavior alleged
here, and society as a whole should
loudly reject it ... If you’re not angry,
you don’t have a soul.”
