someone who’s got to gripe,”

person told us: ‘You owe royalties
to Pearl Jam!’ Our guitarist Tyla

were trying to make a
record that sounded
like Foo Fighters!”
Stanford is a
painter and decorator
by trade but music is
KLV¿UVWORYH«HYHQLI
it was Boyzone’s
Ronan Keating who
made him want to be a singer,
back in primary school. “That’s
GH¿QLWHO\QRWULJKWIRU3ODQHW
Rock is it?” he chuckles. “But
WKHQ 7 \OD¶VEURWKHUĬ7RGGĭKDG
a band called Psycho Squad who
were really cool, and by the time
I got to comprehensive school
I was looking to them and Thin
Lizzy and Feeder, and trying to
create my own thing.”
That thing became Tiger
Please, who formed in 2008 and
UHOHDVHGWZR(3VĦ¶V7KH\
'RQ·W&KDQJH8QGHU0RRQOLJKW and
2010’s 6HDVRQVĦEHIRUHHYROYLQJ
into The People The Poet, whose
line up is completed by the aforeĥ
mentioned Tyla Campbell, son
of Motörhead’s Phil Campbell
and a member of his Bastard
Sons band, bassist Pete Mills
plus drummer Lewis Roswell.

The quartet’s debut album,
2013 ’s 7KH1DUUDWRU, was an emoĥ
WLRQDOWRXUĥGHĥIRUFHEXLOWDURXQG
stories sent in by fans, which
covered abuse, body image, eatĥ
ing disorders and cancer. “Most
PXVLFLDQVVWDUWRɱZLWKDGHEXW
record made up of songs they’ve
been playing live for years,” says
Stanford. “We went straight into
‘overblown concept album’ terriĥ
WRU\ ́,WZDV¿YH\HDUVEHIRUHWKH
group’s second album, the equally
intense $6KRUW2EVHVVLRQ:LWK
7LPH emerged, receiving rave
reviews, but failing to receive the
mainstream attention it merited.
“We’ve had lots of
support over the
years,” Stanford says.
“We’ve played Latiĥ
tude and Hay and
SXSW, and done live
sessions for Radio 2.
But we’ve never quite
made it.”
Perhaps 2020 will be their
\HDU:LWKWKHLUSUR¿OHERRVWHG
by Stanford’s excellent cameo on
Phil Campbell’s 2OG/LRQV6WLOO
5RDU album, the audience for
their emotive and intelligent alt.
rock is still growing.
“It’s escapism from the real
world,” says Stanford. “Our
main thing now is getting as
much music out there as possible
so we’re releasing new singles
every couple of months. It keeps
it fresh.”
