The best thing
I’ve heard recently: I
discovered the only band with
a worse name than mine,
called Moron Police! Proof
that a terrible name does not
mean they make terrible
music. In fact, I haven’t
stopped playing A Boat On
The SeaVLQFH,¿UVWKHDUG
the song Captain Awkward!
The best thing I’ve seen
recently: I went out to the
PLGGOHRIÀLSSLQ¶QRZKHUH
to a place called Trading
Boundaries to see Twats In
Hats, aka Jem Godfrey and John
Mitchell, play various tracks
from their various bands, like
Frost and Kino. The gig was
great, but the venue alone was
worth the trip. You can see a gig,
have a meal, gaze at/buy actual
Roger Dean prints and purchase
a bed, all in one place!
My favourite memory from 1980:^
Uh, puberty? I turned 12, so

already listening to Rush, so

just stunning, with great
lyrics and the

not making criminal plans
against Darren but I can
see why Viola Davis has
won all the awards!
My favourite memory
from 1980: I’d just
started school, so my
favourite memory was
the free milk you got
with a bottle and a
straw most days!
Iron Maiden never visited Ireland in
the ’80s – we always wondered
whether it was because Bruce
Dickinson was scared to inflame
tensions with his customary waving
of the Union Jack during The Trooper
while on-stage in Belfast or Dublin
- and so news of a first Maiden live
album caused much excitement
among the small knot of metalheads
in my form in 1985. When my wage
packet from Dunnes finally offered
up sufficient funds, I headed to
Makin’ Tracks in Belfast city centre to
get my mitts on the
double cassette.
Once inserted into
the family Amstrad
stereo tape deck,
Maiden’s
masterpiece blew
my 15-year-old
mind. Pretty sure I
can still recall
Bruce’s song intros
and the extended
crowd-baiting
during Running
Free word-for-word.
I’ve seen Maiden
many times since,
but those original
“Scream for me
Long Beach!” yells
still raise
goosebumps!

WHO: Kiss
WHERE: Tarrant
County Convention
Center, Fort
Worth, Texas
WHEN: August 11,
1976
My first gig was Kiss
with Bob Seger and
Artful Dodger. I was a
wee, small lad, about
a month shy of my
12th birthday. My dad
had never been to a
rock show, and he
bought a roll of
tickets for us: him,
me, my brothers, and
their friends.
Following Artful
Dodger and Bob
Seger it was, “You
wanted the best...”,
etc. And, of course,
what you think
happened next, did.
Party anthems set to
fire-breathing,
smoking guitars,
blood-spitting,
Destroyer-era
black-and-silver
costumes and
platforms, glitter,
make-up , Gene’s
tongue, Paul’s
self-absorption,
explosions, pyro.
It was the
greatest thing
I’d seen and
heard in my life.
My tastes have
changed, but it
was one helluva
PAWTY!
About six
weeks later, I
started middle
school. An older
kid was giving
me shit on the
school bus
- and another
older guy said,
“Hey! Leave him
alone, man. He
was at the Kiss
concert.” “Oh,
sorry, man.”
Thanks Dad!
