Big nights out with Slipknot, The Wildhearts and Brian Fallon, quiet nights in with The Morning
Show, Mrs Fletcher and Uncut Gems, repeated high volume listens to Therapy?’s glorious Greatest
Hits album, the ongoing quest for a dream record shop, tax returns, tantrums,
a totally unprintable Ghost story, a nice chat
with Mr Diggle, Linda’s new contract, broken
New Year resolutions, deadline day heart attacks
and the disarming honesty of the ‘Help Get
A Punk Drunk’ sign held aloft by one of our
enterprising neighbours in Camden Town...

THIS ISSUE OF
PLANET ROCK
MAGAZINE HAS
BEEN CREATED
WITH THE
FOLLOWING
STIMULANTS...

Credit where it’s due, the argument positing 1980 as the

greatest year in rock history originated with noted heavy metal

historian Paul Elliott, and has been passionately, and drunkenly,

debated in bars, on tour buses and in backstage areas across the

world more times than I care to remember. I was 10 in 1980, still

listening to Showaddywaddy to be honest, but my esteemed

colleague Mark Blake was in the thick of the action, as returning

legends and hungry NWOBHM upstarts turned metal into a

global religion. After reading through this issue and digging out

the albums that made it so special, we defy anyone to stake a

claim for a more thrilling and important 12 months. Sadly, our

excitement in preparing PR19 took a huge hit with the heartbreaking

news of Rush drummer Neil Peart’s passing on

January 7. This issue is dedicated, respectfully,

to his memory...
