Poppy picture

T

he Icelandic poppy
is loved by many for
its beautifully ruffled,
almost crepe paper-like petals.
And, combining showy blooms
with delicate, rich green foliage,
this charming flower doesn’t
only attract us stitchers, but it’s
also a haven for bees, birds and
butterflies. Focusing on the
flower heads, this design evokes
the charm of these plants.

Capturing details with clever
shading that gives the piece a
3D feel, each poppy is layered,
one in front of the other, to
create a sense of depth. You’ll
use a palette of just 15 shades,
with seven in varying tones of
red, orange and yellow. Skillfully
working whole cross stitches,
and a scattering of fractionals,
it’ll be such a delight to watch
each petal blossom into life.
