Advent calendar key

1

Back each number with some
medium weight iron-on interfacing

and then trim to 9x9cm (3¾x3¾in). Hem

the edges of each square by 1cm (½in).

2

Plot out the shape of your tree onto
the piece of mountboard. Ours is

44x42cm (17¼x16½in). Lay out the

squares inside to check spacing. When

you are happy with it, cut out the tree.

3

Place the mountboard tree onto your
chosen backing fabric. Using tailor’s
chalk, draw around the mount to mark
the tree’s shape onto the backing fabric.

4

Pin the numbers into position – these
will be the advent pockets Stitch each
pocket in place, stitching along the sides
and bottom edge only, so that the top of
each pocket is left unstitched.

5

Apply double-sided tape or spray
mount adhesive to the front of the
tree mountboard. Position the fabric tree
on top and stick in place.

6

Trim the fabric with a 5cm (2in)
border all around. Remove excess
from the corners. Glue fabric to the back
with craft glue. Finish by attaching a loop
of ribbon to the top to hang.

Stitching idea
Mix up the treats inside
the pockets to make your
advent calendar more
interesting. You could print
out jokes or riddles onto
card and pop into some
pockets, put small toys in
others and edible treats in
the remaining ones!
