Fernando PACHECO

(River Plate
& Arg)
A striker in the
mold of former
Brazil star Bebeto,
he is mobile,
intelligent, two-
footed and full
of splendid
combination play.
His main problem
could be finding
a space where
his talents can
bloom since
he is especially
well suited to the
second striker
role in a 4-4-2.

(Palestino & Chl)
Left-footed centre-back who formed
an excellent combination with Nico
Rodriguez in a side that kept three
clean sheets in four games. Quick
and neat, though his lack of height
could mean that his long-term future
is at left-back. His father and older
brother are both Chile internationals.

(Bayer Leverkusen, Ger, & Bra)
Support striker who was mainly used
cutting in from wide on the left. Strong,
quick, direct and uncomplicated, the best
news from this tournament was that his
left foot has developed since leaving
Vasco da Gama. Has struggled for game
time since moving to Germany in July
2018 but the 19-year-old’s talent cannot
be ignored.

(Lyon, Fra, & Bra)
Central midfielder who is confident
on the ball and has a strong
personality. Versatile, he can tackle
hard and has a good range of passing,
including subtle defence-splitting
balls. Left Athletico Paranaense to
move to France, where he may have
to work hard on his left foot.

(Hertha Berlin, Ger, & Bra)
Arrived at the tournament low on
confidence after a difficult few months
at RB Leipzig – who he has since left
for Hertha – but came good towards
the end of the competition and finished
as the top scorer with five goals. Rangy
figure who can finish off either foot and
in the air, and whose build-up play got
better as well.

(Fenix & Uru)
Looks like a real find. Won his place
during the competition and instantly
improved the team. Holding
midfielder who reads the game with
impressive maturity and possesses
quality on the ball. Still only 18, he
is young enough for next year’s
under-20s. Made his professional
debut for Fenix at the age of 15.

(River Plate,
Arg, & Col)
Buckled in
the end under the
strain of carrying
an ordinary team
on home ground,
but produced
some lovely
moments along
the way. Attacking
midfielder with
delightfully quick
feet and a rapier
shot. At 21
he has already
played in four
different countries:
Colombia, Spain,
Ukraine and now,
since the summer,
Argentina.

(Fluminense,
Bra, & Per)
Carried the fight
bravely in all
his side’s games.
Strong, long-
striding attacking
midfielder who
made surging runs
down both flanks.
With Sporting
Cristal since the
age of 14, he won
two league titles
with the Peruvian
club but is now
bound for Brazil.
The question
is, has the move
come too early?
