Stitcher’s guide

Our elephant is stitched

onto 14-count white aida,

using 24 shades of cotton.

The cross stitch is worked

in two strands of thread

and the backstitch in one

strand. There are French

knots in one strand of

thread using four different

colours, and this design

contains fractionals,

too. This design will suit

experienced stitchers as

well as intermediates who

are ready for a challenge.

We’re going wild for this vibrant project,

inspired by the colours of India, and

showcasing a cheerful elephant flanked

by a pair of vivid parrots

Find the centre of your

fabric by folding it in half

horizontally and vertically.

Follow the arrows on the chart

to find its centre and start

stitching here, working your

way outwards.

Work the cross stitch using

two strands of cotton.

Where you see a tiny symbol

on the chart, work a fractional

stitch in its place.

Add the backstitch using

one strand of cotton. Then,

work the French knots using

one strand of cotton.

When you have completed

the stitching, then carefully

check over your finished work

and prepare it for framing.
