Since having our first child
and, with me needing a space
at home to work from, my wife and
I had to look for somewhere a little
bigger to live. Around nine months
ago, we relocated to our new home
and work began on creating my
new space.
The main feature of the office is
the desk and the lighting. I prefer
raw wood over varnished as I feel
raw wood has more character.
For this desktop, I went with two
layers of 18mm plywood for rigidity
and stacked them on some IKEA
cabinets for storage. To accentuate
everything I threw a load of gaudy
lighting into the mix and I love it.
My favourite section of the
office has to be my ever-growing
mechanical keyboard collection [1].

I’ve currently got si x boards and a
couple of macro pads. My keyboard
obsession is a bit out of control
at this point. Day-to-day, I
rotate between a UT47.2 and
an Ortholinear RoPro. Recently
I picked up a split 40% Corne
keyboard so I’ve been on that
learning curve of late.
On top of my desk, I also have a
modest accumulation of pens and
mechanical pencils [2]. My wife
got me a Kaweco Brass Sport for
Christmas, which has been top of
the list since then. It’s heavy, looks
good, writes great and the brass
looks better with every use.
The shelf on the wall to my right
houses my playing card collection
[3]. An interesting design is
fantastic regardless of the medium

and playing cards are just another
inspiration source for me. Most
of the decks I have currently were
backed on Kickstarter to help new
designers into the market. The
high shelf above my desk contains
a decade or so of designer/vinyl
toys from various artists, including
my all-time favourite Kidrobot
Dunny by McFaul [4]. I’ve picked
these up from various cities that
I’ve visited, including an awesome
Staple Pigeon.
Last but not least is my 13”
MacBook Pro and ultra-wide
monitor [5]. Without these, I
wouldn’t be able to work for
clients, do personal projects or
just design and build things for
fun. It’s not the most glamorous of
combinations but following years
of tweaking, this setup works for
me and offers the capability to
work away from my desk at the
drop of a hat if needed.
