FLAT UI AND A HALF

jQuery UI, a collection of reusable GUI widgets and
components, remain a useful tool for web interface
designers. These obviously follow standardised conventions,
for good reason, but this can make them stylistically a bit
well... dull? Have no fear, however, because designer and
developer Yanlin Ma is here to jazz things up a bit.
Flat UI And A Half is his own showcase of what he terms
“2.5D UI interaction experiments” for visitors to play with. It’s
kind of proof of concept meets artistic statement, favouring
imaginative reinterpretation over practical reworking of old
classics. Eight of them to be precise, with button, toggle, slider,
input textbox, checkbox, radio, carousel and star rating all
represented beautifully.
An opening menu screen sets the colourful tone featured
throughout, with chunky child-like ‘stickers’ arranged to click
through. On rollover these do indeed appear sticky, thanks to
a neat effect that latches to your pointer on rollover before
springing back into place.
It’s a nice hint of the physics Ma also applies to the
components themselves, with examples like the various
buttons animated with satisfying weightiness. All oversized
and simple to navigate, it’s lovely to see how a simple concept
can be executed with skill and wit.
