BECOMING PRINCE

Prince Rogers Nelson, known merely as Prince

or ‘The Artist’ for a time, was undoubtedly a

musical genius. His untimely death in 2016 was felt

globally and this poignant site celebrates his

enduring memory. Becoming Prince focuses on the

star’s formative years and in particular how his birth

town of Minneapolis, Minnesota, shaped destiny.

Base Design, the site’s makers, boasts a

collective network of creative studios scattered

across Brussels, Geneva, Melbourne and New

York. It’s the latter team that’s credited with this

project, endorsed and supported very much by

the late artist’s estate. Divided quite literally into

two halves, the experience lets fans read a richly

presented ‘His Story’ text, punctuated by rare

imagery and sound clips. These neatly worked

interview snippets are cleverly integrated as pull

quotes, triggering playback on rollover, click or tap.

Old band mates, family and Prince’s own memories

are featured and help to make this a wonderful

multimedia experience on any device.

Meanwhile, the second portion leverages Google

Maps API to neatly plot important locations in

Prince’s life mentioned throughout. Thumbnail

images and photography pinpoint the previous

homes, schools and theatres that paved the way to

Paisley Park – ideal for Princely pilgrimages.
