If Red Collar sounds familiar to you, it’s because the
New-York-based agency’s ‘Save Whales’ site has
been featured in net before. At that time the intention was
to make a heartfelt statement about the majestic
mammals’ dwindling numbers, using WebGL to great effect.
This time the focus is delivering an equally dynamic
showcase of the team’s own corporate typeset: RedCollar
font. Asserting its influence on the agency’s current and
future identity, RedCollar is a collaboration with TypeType
foundry and has “one universal style” – Regular.
This brilliant, albeit short, presentation of its design packs
a huge visual punch thanks to inventive animation work.
Triggered by two-way reversible scroll, the Cyrillic and Latin
glyph sets are rendered in a variety of vignettes. Ticker
tapes of letters glide horizontally, full character sets can be
toggled and alternative glyphs compared graphically side-
by-side. Looking and behaving identically between desktop
and mobile, the highlights include a ‘snake scene’ that
slithers a serpent between two S and Q characters, before a
3D bubble magnifies and distorts others.
At moments the optical effects can be rather strobe-like
but overall this is an intriguing experimental showcase that
is a great way to show off a corporate font.
