84 The World of Cross Stitching
Project Grazing Sheep

DESIGNED BY DURENE JONES
Herald the arrival of warmer weather and blossoming trees
with a stitch that’s sure to get you in the mood for spring
pastures
A
newborn lamb and its mother
are enjoying nibbling the grass,
while all around the pair fresh
leaves unfurl and buds emerge. At
the end of a long winter, these are
the things that we look for to show
that spring is really here, and Durene’s
vibrant design has captured the
excitement we feel when these signs
of new life finally arrive.
This project may be small but its
detail is mighty! You’ll find whole and
half cross stitch, plus fractionals and
backstitch to achieve the curves, with
lots of French knots for the foliage.
Blue half stitches on the light blue
aida create a serene sky against which
the sheep, trees and plants really
stand out. There’s also backstitch in a
mixture of one and two strands, so be
sure to check the chart carefully.
This sweet scene is designed to
fit into a 7in wooden hoop, making
it extremely easy to finish and hang
your final piece – just in time for
warmer days and lighter evenings!

When I see the newborn lambs in the
fields, this signifies the arrival of spring to me.
Even if snow is still on the ground, I know
spring is just around the corner, and that’s the
feeling I’ve tried to capture in this design.
