thisweek,andis celebratedin differentwaysacrossthe
world.In theUK,thePancakeDayraceis a popular
tradition,withthisoneat Olneybeingworld-famous.
The tradition is thought to date back to 1445 when a
womanfromthetownheardthechurchbellstollingfor
ShroveTuesdaywhileshewasmakingpancakesand
rantothechurchin herapron,stillholdingherfrying
pan.Duringtherace,eachcontestanthasa fryingpan
whichcontainsa hotpancakewhichmustbetossed
threetimes.Thewinneris thepersonwhoarrivesat the
church and serves the pancake to the bellringer first.
