Know your angles
Always consider your angles in urban
and rural landscape photography. As
this technique is all about altering and flattening
perspective, keep an eye on getting straight
horizontal and vertical lines throughout, for a tidier
final image. To practise this, open one of your images
in your image editor. I’m using Photoshop. Go to
View > New Guide, then select Horizontal or Vertical.
Using the Move Tool, you can reposition the guides
in line with the edges of your subjects to see if
you are capturing everything straight.

Camera Raw
Viewing the resulting
images in post-
production, some key tools can
be of benefit. It’s important to
keep control of Shadow and
Highlight adjustments, and to
reduce the effect of shadows
in the photograph. Be mindful
of boosting Contrast: you want
the subjects to merge with each
other as much as possible for
the flattened perspective to
be more effective.

Ditch the rule
of thirds!
In conventional
landscape photography, around
one third of the sky is included
to balance the image. With the
style and effect we are aiming for,
though, it is better to move the
lens further down to get more
subject matter into the frame.
To achieve this, shoot from higher
vantage points so your composition
includes more elements over a
greater distance.
