Small but smart setup
One of the challenges I faced during this
project was to not impede the pilots and
paramedics as they responded to emergency
calls. They are in the business of saving lives,
and generally will be called to incidents
where patients need immediate critical care.
Working light and portable was key for me,
so I could relocate and clear kit immediately
if required. The combination of being able
to use my Sony Alpha 7R III and Rotolights
running on battery power meant I could work
with a highly portable and flexible setup. The
camera was small enough to be handheld,
yet powerful enough to deliver high-quality
images from its 42 megapixel sensor.

Lens options for opportunities
My favourite lenses for shooting this style of
portraiture are the Sony 85mm G Master,
the 135mm G Master and the 24mm G Master.
All three lenses have a unique look and a
fast aperture of f/1.4, which gives great
subject separation from the background.
Sony’s Eye AF feature on the Alpha 9 and
the A7R III really helped me nail good focus
on the eyes of my subjects when I was
shooting with wide-open apertures.

Prep, plan and deliver
Create a mood board of ideas before the
shoot, and share these with everyone involved.
I always like to keep my ideas fluid, and they
do change a lot at times during a shoot, but
having an initial starting point is crucial to
give some direction to all involved. For
commercial work, the final output needs to
be considered carefully to see if your creative
vision meets the requirements of the client.
